September 26, 1896: Born: Vaughn De Leath, popular singer/crooner.

September 26, 1931: Died: Harry Macdonough, pioneer tenor and prolific recording artist.

September 26, 1937: Died: Bessie Smith, the most popular female blues singer of the 1920s-1930s.

In 1970, it was Janis Joplin who purchased the headstone for Bessie Smith's grave.
