Absolutely. The listing clearly states that this is a replica. My question is : Who would pay to have a replica of doubtful quality shipped halfway across the world when the real thing could be bought for a similar price close to home?

Maybe the BBC will start using these in place of the conventional brass colored (coloured?) outside-horn crap-o-phones they normally use as props in period shows?

They are beautiful, but details seem poorly made when examined...

One UK dealer used to hire out genuine machines to film and TV production companies. Now anything with a horn will do.OrthoFan wrote: Wed Oct 02, 2024 10:32 am Maybe the BBC will start using these in place of the conventional brass colored (coloured?) outside-horn crap-o-phones they normally use as props in period shows?![]()

I recall being entranced with one of Ian Maxted's in the film Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children.epigramophone wrote: Wed Oct 02, 2024 1:29 pmOne UK dealer used to hire out genuine machines to film and TV production companies. I was recently about to do likewise for a jazz era production just starting in London, and went to some lengths to prepare a couple of proper horn machines they could choose from and to describe the woes of crapophones (whilst at the same time offering them a couple of the latter which I had previously planned to destroy spectacularly on video) - I think I put them off! After all that they said they were "going in a different direction now."

We get a limited supply of BBC productions--mostly murder mysteries--in the United States that are broadcast on conventional television. Virtually all of them appear on the "member-supported" PBS (Public Broadcasting Station) network. There's also BritBox, which is online or via app.epigramophone wrote: Wed Oct 02, 2024 1:29 pm One UK dealer used to hire out genuine machines to film and TV production companies. The earlier shows normally featured an authentic gramophone, though not necessarily right for the period, but starting about 15 years ago, the same crap-o-phone style prop has been used in "Father Brown Mysteries," "Miss Fischer Mysteries," "Midsomer Murders," and similar shows. In a few cases, the tonearm has been positioned on the wrong side of the record. What's really funny is when they show a crap-o-phone playing an orchestral or opera record and dub in a full scale modern stereo recording for the sound effect.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
I see a "wrong for the period" gooseneck tonearm, a typical crap-o-phone sound box (so God knows what it will sound like), a side-of-the-case horizontally mounted crank. It would be interesting to peek inside the case to see what the motor is like, as well as the horn chamber, if it even has one.Inigo wrote: Wed Oct 02, 2024 12:35 pm They are beautiful, but details seem poorly made when examined...

Re: HMV Portable crapophones?
Selling a copy at a price where one can by an original. Seems weird. Where are they pirating the motors and arms / soundboxes from?
