Victor IX hand crank cleaning

Post by Shaun8484 »

I believe I have a 1916 Victor VVIX, I am attempting to clean it up and restore it. My question is, I assume the crank handle is plated, that is obviously coming off and mostly gone. What’s the best way to “make it shiny again”? Should I just sand and polish till it shines? Replating? Do they make a repop? I’d like to keep original if possible.

You could sand it down to bare metal and polish it. Having it replated would be more expensive than a crank like that is worth. This fellow makes some very nice reproductions. Not suggesting this one is the right size, so you'll have to take some measurements before ordering one.

Thanks Jerry, looked at his store on eBay and it doesn't look like he has the crank I need but definitely some nice pieces. I think my best bet is to sand it down and polish it. This is what I’m working with.
