Edison Standard on SFbay Craigslist

Post by OrthoFan »

For anyone who's interested:

This has been on craigslist for about a month, and re-listed once:

I'm not sure if this is in the ballpark, as far as "nation-wide" prices go, but for the Bay area, $200 for an Edison Standard, even without the horn, is cheap. (Wish I didn't have other expenditures facing me right now. )

Looking at the Reproducer weight laying upside down in the upper right corner and the apparent absence of one on the Reproducer in the eyelet, "working condition" is subjective..............

LOL, probably to the seller, the fact that something turns means it works.
Nonetheless, these are more typical of pricing in the Bay area:

That oak Columbia is a nice looking machine, but $700.00? Yikes! Seriously though, $200.00 for that Standard isn't bad at all and you could probably get it for less by pointing out the Reproducer issue.

The price comparison needs to be with other cylinder machines. That said, I would definitely give it a look and perhaps make lower offer based on the condition of the reproducer. Most likely the hinge block is broken (less than $5.00 from Ron Sitko), possibly the limit pin also. These things take a little bit of work but parts are readily available from Ron.

Last week DeeDee and I went to the San Francisco area to see my sister and attend the Alameda flea market so I emailed the seller of this Standard to express my interest. I provided my phone number and hoped for a call but received nothing. Imagine my surprise when I found the same machine at the flea market! I made an offer and now it's mine. Thanks for starting this thread. Jerry Blais

Hi Jerry:

I've been away for awhile. Glad you got it, and hope it works out okay. When you have a chance, post some photos.

From what I could see, this looks like an Edison Standard Type B [no speed adjustment through the bedplate, but still has the end gate mandrel shaft]. It should be a good machine. No great rarity, but there was a reason the Standard and the Home were the two most popular models at the time--they both played well [and used the same motor, with the winding shaft lengthened on the Home version], and the cost was moderate. :)

Today a father and his young adult son came by to look at a Columbia BK that I had on craigslist. Both fellows wanted to buy the BK and then one spotted the Edison Standard from this thread. The father bought the BK and the son bought the Standard. Both seemed very interested in the hobby and maybe this Standard will be the machine that helped start a new collector. I invited both of them to an open house at our home the day before the Sounds of Nostalgia Flea Market that's being held in Salem, OR on May 15th. Jerry Blais
