SOLD: VICTOR TALKING MACHINE RIGID ARM HORN - $150

Post by Bluefish1257 »

SOLD: Here is a Victor Rigid Arm Talking Machine horn. This is the brass bell type that has a very decent horn decal on it. Black paint on horn shows surface rust in places but should restore or clean up nicely. Brass bell is fairly straight with no splits.

Factory Horns supplied with the rigid arm machines I have seen have the decal on the left side of the horn with the seam pointed down. This horn has the decal on the right side of the horn with the seam down. Front mount horn that can be used on a rigid arm machine as well but not a true rigid arm supplied horn? My thinking may be off on this. Can George P. Possible way in on this question?

I wasn't going to say anything because I don't want to throw a wrench into someone's deal - especially if I'm wrong - but it looks like a front-mount horn to me.

John Duffy would be a good resource for this question.

Thanks for the reply. Horn can certainly be used on a rigid arm machine and the placement of the decal may be a moot point.

I would like to know the diameter of the bell and length. It appears to be the shape of the 13 ¾" bell. I believe (if it is 13 ¾" diameter) you will find this a bit longer (22") than the typical FM Victor horn.

The blue background decal means its early.

I do not have any literature that indicates a 13 ¾" diameter horn was ever available for a Victor for a FM machine. I do have literature that states dimensions of a B&B horn 24" long (with elbow) with a blue background decal would be perfectly appropriate as the OEM size on a rigid arm MS. Kevin's' thoughts regarding the side of the horn for the decal which I agree with, but the horn dimensions I think dictate it is a rigid arm horn for MS.

Those are my thoughts.

Size would seem to rule over placement of a decal. Would a bell diameter of 13 ¾ also be correct for a 27 inch long rigid arm horn as well?

Let me add a picture.

Here is a Rigid E with an oversized horn,. It has the blue background decal. I no longer own the machine, so I can't give the exact dimensions of the horn. I can say it was bought in a farm sale in 1970 - I have attached the farm sale bill.

So, larger horns were definitely offered on smaller rigid arm machines.

As you look at the machine, the decal is on the right(ish) side of the horn and the seam is on the bottom. This is consistent with three other Rigid Arm machines with decaled horns that I have owned. These machines don't always have a decal on the Black and Brass horns - examples of the smaller black and brass horn lack the decal, as well as all brass examples.

What I have found with Rigid Arm horns, is that when screwed on to a rigid elbow, the seam is exactly on the bottom, lined up with the seam on the elbow. Front mount horns, when screwed on to the elbow, the seam does not exactly end up at the bottom, offset from the seam on the elbow. It can be forced to be close, but it is definitely not spot on. When screwed on a front mount elbow, front mount horns end up with the seam on the bottom, lined up with the seam on the elbow. The elbows are slightly definitely different between front and rigid mount machines.

A bit more mystery:

I've seen multiple rigid arm machines with no decal at all. I'd speculated that a rigid am with a decaled horn, the horn might have come from a front mount. Also, it seems to me that the taper is less extreme on the bell on some front mount M and MS and also Rigid arms. My E below does have the seam perfectly aligned with the seam on the elbow as Shawn describes.

I'm no expert and don't see dozens of examples so I welcome contradicting observations.
