Here's an interesting opportunity - albeit with the wrong tonearm and soundbox.

I wonder whether the correct tonearm is the same as other more common HMVs of the period - does anyone know?

Actually it’s the same one used with the 109 table grand. I swapped out a rusty one from a 109 parts machine I had at one time.

This lot made £420 hammer price - a whopping 35.4% fees & VAT makes that about £567. A very strong price considering the wrong tonearm and soundbox (if the high bidders were aware), general condition and any other uncertainties.

Thank you for the update! I did look but the ‘auctioneer has chosen not to publish the price of this lot’. It seems most auctioneers are now exploiting the sale of this basic and public information to fee-paying sites and Toovey’s are an obvious candidate. I think this greed on top of the high commissions is sickening.

Are you referring to eBay listing fees, or final value fees?

Both. Selling on UK eBay for private sellers is completely free of charge with effect from 1st October 2024.

Strictly speaking, the 103 tone-arm is the right replacement. 109 is the same, except that it has two redundant screw-hole in the base, where the arm for the automatic stop was fitted.

If I had a HMV 103 parts machine, I would of course used its tone arm.

My HMV 109’s eventually went on to become some one’s else’s project. I’m a “gramophone” recycler
