The photos are great! it is interesting to see that the tip of the needle is so much larger than the groove, making it a challenge to track it. Something that would be great to see is the wear of the needle, i.e., comparing the needle tip before and after a record play. As a matter of course I always sharpen the needle after a side, but I never looked at the tip in magnification to check how much it wears.IainP1 wrote: Fri Nov 08, 2024 4:19 am I should say, the needle and record was under the microscope and the needle was not "in play" rather was just supported there with a homemade mechanism including miniature clothes pegs, so sorry if it's created confusion!

Thanks mate! I'll do that, as it's an unused needle so will be interesting to see.CarlosV wrote: Fri Nov 08, 2024 6:01 amThe photos are great! it is interesting to see that the tip of the needle is so much larger than the groove, making it a challenge to track it. I have posted this photo before but some may not have seen it.
I always inspect the needle after sharpening, just to make sure I got it right, because I do not have a real sharpening accessory, I just use a pin vise and fine sandpaper.
Here also is a needle after a play or two.

Interesting. I'll definitely give this a go, and with some steel needles too.Hoodoo wrote: Fri Nov 08, 2024 10:57 am I have posted this photo before but some may not have seen it.
