Wanted: TAR Swiss made gramophone motor (or springs)

Post by kirtley2012 »

I’ve got a little Decca trench type gramophone here which is fitted with a double spring Swiss made motor, one of the springs had broken, I fixed it, put a new eyelet on it, and it simply broke further up, I’m thinking there’s a chance it may be cheaper to swap the motor over, or just swap the spring barrels from another motor, than buy new springs, they’re an odd type spring anyhow I believe

Does anyone have a Swiss motor spare, or ones in a parts pile that I can harvest a spring out of?

Cheers

Do you have the spring measurements? How did you know it is an odd spring?
Have you tried the supplies from Soundgen? He used to have a long list with every type of spring. If not, you could try Meadows & Passmore.
In another hand, the website of the Swiss motors
http://www.collection-frioud.ch/index.php
Or this one
https://www.graphonogram.com/4-documentation.html
or you can look into the 'links' pages of these sites, they have an enormous collection of original Swiss catalogs where you could try to find your motor.
It looks too be a Thorens motor with another brand.
In any case, more photos of the motor would be helpful to identify the motor by any expert here...

My spring autumn sale is still 0n viewtopic.php?t=59376

Most likely spring is the Garrard 20 spring which is used in most Decca and which would be £27 including postage

Cheers Mike, is the Garrard 20 ¾" wide and have eyelets at both ends?, if so let me know how to get the money to you

Cheers

It's also helpful to know the dimensions of the barrel. The spring should fill... was it half the volume available? This gives another clue for the right length.
Also to count how many turns the turntable runs for one turn of the barrel. The duration of playing should be at least 4 to 5 minutes for one complete spring development, so 300 to 400 turntable turns... Etc
