HMV 102c spring can

Post by Smitty »

Greetings. I was recently given an HMV 102c in reasonably good condition although it ran a bit sluggish, motor is a 270 D. When I took the bottom plate off I could see on the spring can that someone has been in there and did not do a proper job of it. Apparently they had trouble putting the lid back on and the rim which holds the retaining spring has been crimped and peened over in places, and the lid itself looks to have been hammered on some, so I stopped short of removing the lid/spring. The rest is in good shape and cleaned up nicely.
So I am wondering if there is much chance of finding a replacement can. The spring I see on eBay but don’t know if that is the best or only source. Any suggestions would be welcome. Thank you.

You do not show your location, but you might find a scrap motor on UK eBay which would serve as a donor.

Smitty was the nickname of the main character of the marvellous film Random Harvest, from 1942, impersonated by Ronald Colman. The story was taken from, who else, a novel by James Hilton. Although for me the real character of the story was the woman, acted by Greer Garson...
Welcome to the forum!
A 102 is ready to repair, you'll find easily replacements for broken parts, etc. If you live in the UK I suggest you to contact our colleague soundgen, who may have what you need. He's based in Bedford, near London, and it's a very kind person and affable man. He uses the same alias in UK eBay, but contact him privately and explain your problem. He's got also an email address, just check in the member's section.

Thanks for the information, both on my 102 as well as the character name from the movie. I’m not familiar with the movie or the book so that gives me something to look into one of these days. For me the name Smitty comes from a dear relative, long departed, it was a nickname he went by. He would have been contemporary with the movie so who knows, could be a connection. I will contact soundgen. Cheers

Glory to your relative... The Smithy of the film was a very nice person and good man... I don't know exactly if he was Smitty or Smithy... The nickname came because he had amnesia and didn't knew his name, so they used Smith for him. The girl character of Greer Garson put the dearest nickname on him, Smithy.
It's a nice tender story with certain tension and suspense.. if you are sensible and watch the film, have a box of Kleenex nearby, ready for the end.... :D
