HMV C101G info please

Post by JustCraig »

Afternoon All!
I have just acquired an old His Master's Voice C101G.
The plate under the turntable says "for spares quote C101G".
There's a further plate on the motor case that says "motor no59, manufactured by The Gramophone Co Ld Hayes, Middlesex".
I've stripped her down, cleaned he up with parafin, re-greased everything with Lithium-Moly grease and she works nicely. I've no idea how she's meant to sound but to me, she sounds great! The sound has a lovely olde-worlde quality that's missing from my modern vinyl records. I also have a STACK of old 78s.

Anyway, this one is going up for sale. I'm now saving for a proper old gramophone with a massive horn on it because they're so cool!

Is there any way of dating this player at all? I'll attach pictures.

Kind regards.

P.S.
You can see and hear her running on Youtube, his masters voice gramophone, hmv record player, 1920s portable music player. It's a 'short' :D

Hi Craig and welcome to the forum. This looks like a nice machine in good condition. I couldn’t find your YouTube video as the title is too general.

Your machine probably dates to around 1929. Make sure you are playing the record on the correct side, not on the side as shown in your first picture as this will damage your records. Change the needle after every play.

If buying a horn machine make sure it is original and not a modern crapophone from India! You can always ask here for advice.

Thanks for the info Jamie.

How do I know which is the correct side to play....? I had assumed they were side A and side B....

I knew about changing the needle every play though! That's something 😂

He means with the reproducer on the right side of the record, as you do in your video, versus on the left side, as shown in your picture, above.
(But maybe you were teasing?)

Yes you can play either A or B side no problem but you must put the needle down so that the record is moving away from the pointing needle. The needle will dig in if it points towards the moving record. In the case of the 101 place the needle down on the record run in groove the side which is closest to where you insert the winding handle.

Edit: Thanks Jerry. I just found the video and he got it right.

Well, now i know she works properly and is almost a century old, i guess all that's left is to ask if anyone knows roughly what she's worth.
Any ideas anyone? Many thanks.

Well, here around portables like this, in good shape are valued between 100-200 € in general, but these are demanded prices, I have no clue about the real ones when the sale is closed.
Of course, the best condition rises the prices, as do the coloured finishes. The black ones are the cheaper because of large quantity of them available

Check completed listings on eBay to give you an idea of prices. Look for one in similar condition. If yours plays through a record on one winding that’s another bonus.
