Panatrope 109 spring barrel leaks grease

Post by Jeff Kaufman »

Hi, I'm a novice at phonograph repair but after success on one I'm getting hooked. I cleaned, packed, and greased the spring barrel on my Brunswick Panatrope 109. When I bought it there was a pile of old grease under the barrel inside the case. I was very careful to keep track of the order of the parts when I disassembled it so I could be sure to put them back as I found them. The new grease is leaking out, so I wonder if the past person to work on this got something out of order. It seems to me that the mandrel and the barrel are not flush, which would make the gaskets impossible to seat. I've attached a couple pics showing where the grease leaks out and where I found the two gaskets when I took it apart. Grateful for any insight anyone might have. Thank you! Jeff

Grease leakage is pretty much a normal and expected thing. They were never really sealed all that well.

If another colleague has seen this, of has an old instruction manual or scheme, and could illustrate us, we would know where these gaskets must be placed, if they are original or not, etc.
Looks like a very well made motor...

There is likely to be some initial leakage, until the grease distributes itself within the spring barrel. After that, the leakage should reduce a lot. But as I stated earlier, it's kind of normal.
