The Savoy Orpheans play "I Need Some Cooling Off" (Introducing "My Heart Stood Still"), recorded May 1927 and issued on HMV 5290. Played on my HMV 130 tabletop gramophone.
Enjoy!

Is this the copy that sold recently on ebay? If so its a very nice clean copy of this excellent recording. I have a copy but not as in nice a condition as this one. Its a hard one to find.

Yes, it is. But don't worry, I usually play it on modern equipment, and only for this video I played it on the 130.Swing Band Heaven wrote:Is this the copy that sold recently on ebay? Glad to hear it. But I think though that they just don't sound the same (and by that I mean not as good) as when they are played acoustically - the recordings just seem to spring to life whereas on modern equipment they can sound quite flat even with proper EQ adjustment.

Those HMV Model 130s provide an amazing sound for a table model! They're the " mighty midgets", they cost 5pounds 17 shillings and 6 pence in the early thirties which would be about $28.62 at that time.

Yup, the re-entrants might go lower, but lost in midrange and treble to the 130. I preferred my 130 to the model 167 that was still affordable (below 1,000 guilders) when I bought mine. I played disc jockey on many a party and it was amazing how much voluma came out of such a small horn (fully exponential off course). With a well set-up sound box there was hardly any record wear.
HMV made it in different guise well into the thirties, the last ones for (and maybe assembled in) India. As the model 102 is quite probably the world's best portable (at least the best sold imo) the 130 must be the world's best table model.

Do you mean 157? The 167 is a radio AFAIK.
I would expect the US VV 1-90 & Japanese VV 1-95 are pretty much on par with HMVs 130 and 150 models?

The VV 1-90 should sound okay, but they have never impressed me. Now I'll say the two that I've heard were unrestored at flea markets, but even so they were underwhelming. And I think the horn is smaller than that of the 130.

I guess the 1-90 must be closer to the HMV 104 then?
I wonder where the 1-95 stands in the order of horn size.
