Ediphone and Dictaphone recorder stylus question.

Post by oceanlinerfanatic »

What do the Ediphone and Dictaphone recorder stylus look like? Do they look like the reproducers or recorders found on Edison machines?
I cannot find any pictures online about the matter.
Thanks

Yes, if I recall right, they do resemble the home recorders in that the cutting stylus is a jewel cylinder that digs into the record.

The groove size is between the usual 2 and 4 minute sizes. Smaller than the 2 but larger than the 4.

Remember that the business dictation cylinder runs at 150 threads per inch instead of the 100 tpi of the 2-minute entertainment cylinder, or the 200tpi from a 4-minute Amberol record. This was not only good for extending playing time longer than the 2-minute standard, but kept stenographers from listening to records on their headset at work instead of transcribing.

Maybe. I do have a Ediphone reproducer that I might be able to use to take a picture of the stylus. But don't know if I can get close enough to do any good.
