I have an Amberola Vlll. It uses the Fireside motor. My motor is thrashed. Does anyone know if an Edison Standard motor will fit as a replacement?
Thanks

What's wrong with it that can't be fixed?

Re: Question on Amberola Vlll motor
Hi Pete-- Hope all is well- As you know, VIII motor is essentially based off a Fireside motor. I believe the earlier Standards are the same. but that would need to be verified.
And--as Jerry asked-- What's going on with yours that can't be fixed??

Re: Question on Amberola Vlll motor
The machine has a broken spring. The large gear that is attached to the spring barrel has two missing teeth.
The next largest gear in the secondary gear cluster also has two missing teeth. The governor has three broken springs
and the weights are riveted in place. I am trying to decide if I should pay up for a complete new motor or just part the
machine out.

Re: Question on Amberola Vlll motor
Really those are minor repairs. First you need to pull the motor out and remove the damaged gears, match them to the stuff in the Phonograph Shop catalog, then there you go.
Then you need to get 3 governor weights, springs, and screws. All they have to do is weigh the same as the other 2 springs on the machine, not be perfectly identical to the Edison specs, to work.
You'll need an HQ39 mainspring 1" x 11' and some axle grease.

It's a lot of minor repairs at once, though, which makes it seem like a big deal. But it's all doable in an afternoon if you have the parts, and keeps the eBay buzzards from parting out good machines.
