These do not surface very often. It will be interesting to see what the final Auction price will be.

Sold at 1300.00. Nice one, looked to be complete and in fine original condition. Someday, I'd like to hear a side-by-side tone test with a Credenza, just to hear the similarities/differences between the 2 machines.

A very handsome machine but that's a pretty stiff price.

I think I have a tone arm for that machine somewhere in the attic. Jerry

Very rare? Scarce, yes. Rare? Not exactly from my experience. This is at least the 10th one of these I've seen in the last 5 years. I know of a really nice one a few miles from me. They are nice looking machines indeed and they sound pretty decent. Acoustics sound terrific on a Cortez. A Credenza will still blow the doors off of one of these sound wise if you're playing electrics IMHO. I'm sure the seller is rather pleased!

I'm finding it rather interesting that a lot of really cool and not so common machines have been showing up for sale lately. I turned up a VTLA, a very early L-door XVI and an early non-L door in two weeks. Go figure. I'm also in the process of getting a fumed oak A-250 that looks like it just came from the factory. It's odd (at least to me) that all of these machines are turning up lately.

Several years ago I had the Electrola version of this model. I think it was
called the P-14. The cabinet was modified to mount the amplifier way down
below the bottom of the cabinet. Maybe Brunswick's attempt to use up old
cabinets. Same wound around horn with a small driver. I had too many
machines and let it go! Maybe I should have kept it.

  If you happen to be in Toronto, give me a call ahead of time , and we can arrange for a cup of coffie or two, and listen to my Credenza and the Panatrope Cortez.

does that mean that you were the buyer of this particular machine?

I was curious about the sale as well - however uncommon that model might be, the price seemed kind of high, but I'm not terribly familiar with these later non-victor "orthophonic" type machines.

Shaun mentioned that he was "finding it rather interesting that a lot of really cool and not so common machines have been showing up for sale lately." I expect it may be related to tough economic times. I recently picked up a fairly rare VV 9-15 (discussed in another thread)from a gentleman who had been out of work for 2 years. The family needed the money much more that greatgrandfather's old Victrola that had been sitting gathering dust.

And in other cases, as we sadly know, so many of the people who have inherited these wonderful old machines have no interest in them. At least they have good outlets now for selling them so hopefully fewer just get hauled to a dump.

Tough times may indeed be a factor, but the things I've been finding over the last several weeks have been nice high quality machines coming out of estates mainly where the stuff just "had to go" and fast because the house was being sold or already sold. The guy who had the VTLA and early XVI I got is pushing 90 and has decided that he wants the stuff he's collected over the years to be passed on to somebody else who will either keep it or find it a good home before he dies (his words) because he's afraid his children / grandchildren will just dump the stuff. I consider myself very lucky to be connected with a few people that do house cleanouts, I've been offered lots of junk that I've passed on, but lately some really great machines and two incredible record collections that just "had to be gone" right away.
