Got My Newly Made Pathé Styluses

Post by Lah Ca »

I received my newly made Pathé styluses in the mail the other day.

I had been worried about them for a number of reasons. The primary reason, however, is that the Canadian Postal Service has been served strike notice, the strike effective today. Whew! The styluses arrived just in time.

I am most pleased to have them. They extend the functionality of my Aeolian Vocalian machine so that I can now listen to my Pathé records.

However, I am sad to learn that Pathé records present an equal opportunity for owner neglect and abuse. The sound quality, as with laterally cut records, ranges from startlingly good to abysmally awful. I suppose I had no right to expect anything else.

I am wondering if some of the disks, in their long lives, have been subjected to play with steel needles, with or without an appropriately oriented reproducer.

This one is nice.

Details about seller, price, website if any, etc., would be appreciated.

Tried to PM you but there are now two messages stuck in the outbox.

This is not where I got mine .... but ...

Phonographs.org in the US also sells them. I have no idea what quality they are, however. I have bought other things from Phonographs.org, and the guy there, John .. if I remember correctly, seems quite decent. BTW he also sells Edison diamond styluses.

Phonographs.org's price is $80 US plus whatever for shipping, probably modest within the US if that is where you are--no more than registered letter rate, I would guess.

There is a guy in Madrid, Pedro Martínez Díaz, AKA PedroPhono, who makes them, sporadically, in small batches.

Since Pedro does not advertise the styluses, I didn't know how he felt about someone else doing so. But I have his permission now.

He does, however, manufacture and advertise other parts, and there is a contact form and an email address so you can ask him about the styluses directly.

Pedro's price was 55 EUR plus 15 EUR for shipping to Canada. It made sense for me to buy two, since the shipping price was the same. Probably would have been the same for a dozen.

Pedro:
I make a small batch of them from time to time. They require a lot of work because the sapphires must be carved by hand and it takes a lot of time to make them so there's very little profit.

Its more a service to the community than anything else.

I’ve purchased parts for Pathé cylinder reproducers , Pedro has great products and gives good advice/info on Pathé machines.
