Posts like this always make me wonder why we would expect "John Q. Public" to have any idea what type of record to properly play on a 110-year-old Edison phonograph.

When I was 12 or 13 years old, a family friend gave me an Edison B80 machine. I kept trying to play lateral-cut shellac records on it. Of course, they sounded horrible, but in 1967 I was clueless as to why and did not know who to ask about the technology. I don't remember what happened to that phonograph . . . lost -- like so many things -- in the mists of time.
