Advice to Install New Gem D Spring

I have a new replacement Edison Gem D Spring I need to put in. It came with the giant "C" 3/16 diameter metal retainer on it. Should I first put on something skinnier and then remove the C before trying to install it? Then once installed simply cut off the retaining wire and expect what "twang" or "kaboom"? I see no you tube videos (maybe no influencer lived to tell the tale?). Advice?
