“On This Day in the History of Recorded Sound…”
July 31, 1888: Thomas A. Edison was granted a U.S. patent (No.386,974) for “Phonograph.” This machine was powered by a battery-driven motor, and featured Edison’s new “spectacle” reproducer/recorder carriage. The 100 tpi feedscrew would persist on Edison Phonographs for decades.
July 31, 1900: Walter Miller and Jonas Aylsworth filed for a U.S. patent for “Method of Duplicating Phonographic Records.” This important process would allow for the appearance of Edison molded cylinder records in January 1902.
