edison home spring releasing?

Post by phonograph guy3435 »

sometimes when im playing something on my edison home, I can audibly hear what i think is the spring completely releasing. it happens maybe 1/5th of the time and when it does that i have to wind it up again. it doesnt seem to affect play either.

Hi- From your description it sounds like the spring is gunked up with old grease- Are you able to wind it up-- 15 to 20 turns of the crank -- without hearing a major slipping sound? If so, you likely just need to thoroughly clean the spring. The layers of the spring need to slide easily against one another. The old grease becomes hardened and sticky and doesn't allow the spring to unwind smoothly. Then, after sufficient pressure builds, the layers suddenly release making a "clunking" or slipping sound.
Sometimes, you can remove the spring barrel from the motor and soak it in solvent. That may be enough to help the problem- --> But the best way to solve it is to remove the spring from the barrel, soak the spring and clean all the old grease off. then reinstall the spring with fresh grease. Be sure the spring is fully wound down before removing the barrel from the motor-- 'Be careful out there" :)

Hope this helps-

thanks! i will check about the slipping with winding. there are hardened pieces of grease at the bottom of the cabinet so your answer sounds really plausible.
