I Love My Daughter-- Edison Standard FIND !!

Post by outune »

This past Saturday, my wife and I went to yardsales. Of course I'm always on the look out for that phonograph bargain--- and my wife looks for baby and toddler clothes for the three grandkids-- We found clothes--- yawn!

20 miles away-- My daughter was at yardsales looking for toddler clothes---and found this!
The sale had a few antiques-- priced reasonably, but not bargains-- and a Columbia upright for $100-

BUT-- She bought me this Edison Standard-- The best part was the reproducer---and the price tag!! :)
I love that kid! :)

There's still some great finds out there, just waiting for us!

What a sweet daughter you raised. Very cool. Congrats. That is fun on your part. I hope she found other clothes for the kids too. Nice story

Great story! You'll have to post photos of that machine's progress back to a functional machine. If the task proves to daunting, there's a bunch of us here that would double, OK, triple your money back! :D

My daughter brought me the machine this morning...I couldn't wait to dig in to it.
I cleaned up the reproducer.. I didn't try real hard to get the two halves apart to replace gaskets. The pot metal upper housing gets stuck..Rather than chance chiping it, I think it is best to leave it alone.
That said--> This "S" sounds amazing. I put it on my Standard model F with cygnet horn... I have another S that was rebuilt by one of our hobby's best.. The new S sounds better and louder than the rebuilt one....I'm blown away by the quality of the sound for both 2 and 4 minute records-- Stylus' look great!
The machine itself will make a good project for someone...good motor, 2/4 gearing.
Anyway..good finds are still out there. Thankfully my daughter knew enough to know to call dad on this one 😊

The Edison Standard F and C are still the only two variations of the Standard I still DON’T have! 😳

Really great find! Can’t wait to see the progress on it!

Brad,
Great story and great find!
Our adult children are a blessing in so many ways.
What did you use to make that reproducer look so good????

Gene-- Just some WD saturated "0000" steel wool and some cheese cloth... the top has a lot of pitting.

One of my favorite stories involves a Model B Standard my son and daughter-in-law found in a second hand shop. They sent a photo and said the price was $60. The photo showed a neglecled machine with very little finish and some rust on the motor board but it had combination gearing so I asked them to pick it up for me. When I got it on my work bench I though at the very least it was a good parts donor. So I offered the combination parts here on the Forum but there was no interest. My next step was to take the machine to Cliff B. to have him service the spring motor. He reported back that after repacking the spring the motor ran quite strong and it was the most quiet Standard motor he had ever serviced. I had been looking for a machine to travel with me to family reunions, school demonstrations, and other events and this machine met those needs. I refinished the case, painted and striped the deck, and had the reproducer serviced. I've used it for recording as well as playing and it's never failed to perform perfectly.

Love the story, Jerry-- Bringing machines back from the "brink" is one of my favorite things--- Over the years I've found a few machines that were literally on their way to the dump-- I once motioned to a pick-up truck driver to pull over just before he turned into a landfill- I could see the lid of a machine peeking over the tail gate-- It was a VV-IX in oak-- quite rough, but it cleaned up well...
I'm not sure if I'll try to restore this Standard-- (I have a few others in similar or better condition) Hopefully I'll find a new collector who is looking for a project-- :)

PS--Jerry-- I carefully considered your offer to triple my money :) After 3 nano-seconds, I opted to decline :)
