Good Evening all,
I have recently acquired an Edison Gem and have just managed to get 100 + years of crud from the motor after giving it a good soak in petrol and yards of kitchen roll.
Can I use petrol to clean the cast metal parts of the machine without damaging the finish and transfers ? or what would be an acceptable alternative solution.
Thank you in anticipation.

Metal parts that are plated or bare metal, yes. I in fact use lacquer thinner. But the painted metal case with gold details absolutely not. Any strong solvent will destroy the [paint and especially the decal filigree.
First just soap and mild dish detergent with a soft cloth. Then I use a product called New Life Furniture Masque. Go at it very sparingly or it too can ruin the gold filigree. Do not be in a hurry and do small areas at a time.
I finish up with OZ Crème Furniture polish which is a wonderful product that leaves a glossy shine.
You may but both products through Amazon.
Below are pictured results I had my a Columbia Q.
