HMV 102 Motor Rebuild Questions. Help Appreciated.

Post by mikeverrechia »

Hi,

I'm restoring an HMV 102.

I have dismantled/cleaned the motor and fitted a new spring without injury.
I re-assembled it and found there was some binding stopping it run freely. When I slackened the two nuts and single bolt securing the base plate, it ran OK.
There are some areas of doubt I have as described here:

1) I have read that the main spindle, which has a gear on it and two interferance fit pins should have a ball bearing in the brass bearing in the base plate. Mine doesn't.

2) I am methodical when dismantling, but a washer/spacer fell out and it wasn't possible to see where it came from. It must have been stuck with grease. There are only two possible positions for this (I think). One is under the gear which slides into the spring casing, and the other is at the other side of the spring casing, at the top.

Incidentally, the general condition of all parts (apart from the spring which had a break at its outer end) is remarkably good. I would think someone has worked on it at some point in its 89 years of life.

I would be very grateful for any help regarding this please.

Many thanks......Mike
