I have purchase two funnel horns because I have some early standards and homes. My earliest standard is s/n 2198 and my home is s/n 9118. I have an Edison ad ( I do not know where I found it ) showing the funnel horn on an early two clip standard that has no gear cover. It also shows catalog # 18 for reference. How long was the funnel horn used, possible up to the four clip standard and was it also issued with the earlier homes I am enclosing a copy of the ad.
Off of this topic but related to it. I have posted pictures of the standard renovation and many other phonographs on this site. It is a shame all the past work of many enthusiasts have been destroyed and can no longer be seen. I will post some new pics of my collection in the near future starting with square boxes and working up to the last run of the Edison standard phonograph in 1917 approx.. It is s/n 820130 and is a ICS phonograph.

Re: Funnel horn used in Edison standard and or home
found two more ads in a article called pre 1900 ads by Doug Boilesen written in 2019. One is a standard and one is a HOME. The ads are 1898 and Edison was also National Phonograph. So both homes and standards had funnel horns but I wonder if they were drawn on for the ads.

Re: Funnel horn used in Edison standard and or home
These horns were offered from the early 1890's to the early 1900's by North American, Edison, Columbia, Hawthorne and Sheble, and probably others.
Here it is in an 1898 Columbia catalog. The Columbia Catalog still has them listed in the 1903 catalog. Edison issued the 1901 Bijou with one. They were/ are appropriate for early Edison Class Ms Standards Homes, Spring motors, Columbia A's AT's, AN's, Edison Coin-ops and others I am currently forgetting.
By 1901, these horns were most likely considered dated by most customers, with 14" all brass, 14" black and brass, and 14" aluminum (for Columbia) being preferred.

Re: Funnel horn used in Edison standard and or home
Thank you Shawn and Andersun for the information. I replied late as I was on a California / Mexico shoreline cruise with my brother and sister. It seems they were a little more common than I had thought. It seems weird that there are not more around but then by the 1900s only 5000- 6000 (est.) square boxes had been sold and the bell horn was available. Bit tired from the trip so II will try to respond more tomorrow.

According to Edison sales data, by January 1, 1900, 15,470 Standards had been sold.

Re: Funnel horn used in Edison standard and or home
Thanks George I was going to look it up to give the correct info. By chance do you know what horn was sold with the phonograph as most seem to come with the listening tube and possible a speaker tube? Was the listening tube replaced with a funnel horn? I understand that records of sales with equipment will be non exitance. Also people sold accessories for the phonographs that would be hard to track or non exitance also. This is a small thing about Edisons but I wanted to see what information was available to give others another view of the earlier square boxes. Tom
