Pathé "The Pathéphone" tone arm and motor issues.

Post by casey-eamonn »

Hi all
I ve just started working on what I presume is a Pathé table top with a double spring motor.

My first issue is the when you wind the motor, as soon as you take pressure off the crank handle the mainspring s unwinds. I think I can see what is supposed to happen, in which case there's a locking lug of some sort missing. If anyone has a similar motor I could fashion a replacement lug from a picture to give me an idea of it s shape.

The other issue I have is getting the tone arm off. There are two what looks like grub screws on the side but turning them doesn't unscrew them? Would love your ideas on what's going on there.

I presume it s a 1920's machine but would love any any information on it if possible.

Thanking you in advance

Éamonn

I see the pawl, but where does it engage with the ratchet wheel?

Hi
That was the problem, the part that engaged with the wheel was missing. The cheese head screw that you see in the photo turns out not to be original.

I ended up turning a 4 mm diameter bar with a threaded end that I screwed into where the cheese head screw was and it seems to be working. The only thing I m not sure about is I ve make it from mild steel but, considering that so many other part s appear to be something very similar to mild steel, I hope it ll be fine
.
I m still scratching my head about how to get the tone arm off???

Thanks for the reply

This was what I ended using to lock the wheel when winding, pretty basic but work s. I had a much more complicated plan in mind so I m delighted this seems to work well.

Still no ideas on how to take off the tone arm !!!
