Joseph W. Jones and Columbia

“On This Day in the History of Recorded Sound…”

November 19, 1897: Joseph W. Jones filed for a U.S. patent for “Production of Sound Records.” Young Jones, working in Berliner’s recording laboratory, observed (or surmised) the advantages of recording in wax rather than acid etching, and proceeded to claim the process as his own. When the patent was finally granted 4 years later, it opened the door for Columbia to enter the disc market, while putting the new Victor Talking Machine Company in serious jeopardy.
