im a rather new collector I got my first gramophone and 78s in March 2025 and since then I’ve collected around 500 78s along with a few gramophones. at 20 years old i guess i might fit in the young category?
anyway i have this idea
I’m thinking about a record case design and was curious if anything like the one in the drawing (attached) i made was ever made or if it would be feasible to modify one
I myself dont have the skills to create such a thing but was wondering if such a thing was ever made in the past
Record case idea? does this exist already

Re: Record case idea? does this exist already
Over the years, lots of these type of cases were made in a variety of sizes, 7", 10", and 12".
I have never seen one with a split double hinged lid, where the lid is in two pieces, though.
And I have never seen one with a shoulder strap. You wouldn't want too many 78s or LPs in suspended on a shoulder strap--things would get very heavy, very quickly. Back ache? Posture problems?
If you plan on making something like this, backpack-like shoulder straps might be a better, healthier option.

Re: Record case idea? does this exist already
would maximize it to a 20 record case at most (4kg) which is bearable on a shoulder i would of thought although from what ive seen the maximum suggested for a shoulder bag usually is 3kg or 15 records but would probably be best to design it for 20 and have that extra room for ones with sleeves or slightly thicker 78s
as for the double hinge lid i myself have a case like that already although larger and ive seen many for sale on ebay (see attached photos)

I know (and so do several members of this forum) a highly advanced disc record collector who routinely wears a mid-size backpack to shows. That backpack has held many treasures.

There are actually a number of carrying cases that would be suitable.
The "Victrola" brand offers one suitable for carrying up to 12 inch records -- https://www.victrola.com/products/victr ... le-records
(Prices vary depending on the seller.)
There are others available -- https://www.google.com/search?as_q=Viny ... type=&tbs=
This one has a shoulder strap -- https://www.grooves-inc.com/vinyl-styl- ... e=en&_z=us
Also see -- https://www.google.com/search?q=LP+carr ... AIYASABKAE
Another thing that would probably work is a file carrying case, sold by Office Depot and others -- https://www.officedepot.com/a/products/ ... _id=001135

i was thinking of getting a linguaphone case to convert as they are quite common and have a suitable width and then getting a old leather belt to make the strap
its also sized for 78rpm since well they was used for 78s

Whichever design you choose, make sure that the case is strong enough for 78's i.e. plywood covered in leathercloth.
Some cheap cases for 12 inch LP's were made of cardboard covered in thin vinyl. They will not take the weight of 78's.

Re: Record case idea? does this exist already
It's an old idea. There was a Gramophone record carrying case similar to that in the early 1900s... advertised in the Gramophone record sleeves and accessories catalogues, at least in Spain under the brand Gramophone or later Gramófono, the Spanish HMV branch. I'll try to find an image and post it here.
