Treasure Trove of Edison Blue Amberols!

Post by Casathious »

I know it is not good form to brag, but...

I simply have to let someone know what I have come across; someone who can actually appreciate its significance, because my family could care less! I recently purchased a lot of Blue Amberol cylinders...and in this lot were--among many others--#5682 "Give Your Little Baby Lots of Lovin'" by the 7 Blue Babies--one of the few electrically dubbed cylinders, released in June 1929, and...drum roll please, #5716, "Kansas City Kitty" by Mr. Billy Murray--another electrically dubbed cylinder, released in June 1929, and one of but a very few in the 5700 series!

I nearly had a stroke when I saw it in person! There were quite a few other very late Blue Amberols as well, including the first Blue Amberol dubbed from an electric Diamond Disc, #5400, "Someday You'll Say 'O.K.!'" by Vaughn De Leath. And there were even some harder-to-find Christmas numbers, which I am particularly fond of, such as #2464, "The Night Before Christmas (Recitation)" by Harry E. Humphrey. So suffice it to say I was excited!--Oh, and I forgot to mention, they were all $5.00 a piece.

Anyway, I hope you fellow collectors can be vicariously excited with me! And with "Kansas City Kitty," maybe now I can finally consider myself upgraded from "novice" collector to "intermediate"!

Congratulations, & welcome to the board!
It sounds like you stuck gold, especially at $5 each.
I dont suppose you have a youtube account & a camera? ;)
A lot of those later cylinders cant even be heard on the Cylinder Preservation site.

As a matter-of-fact, I do have a YouTube account. I already have a couple phonograph videos that I put up last summer, like Edward Meeker singing "Take Me Out to the Ball Game" on my Edison Standard phonograph, but I definitely intend to post some of the ones I just came across. I find it exciting to know that I have some cylinders that not even the Cylinder Preservation project at UCSB has yet acquired, so I certainly intend to share them with the public; now I just wish I had an Archeophone!

I came across these cylinders from a seller on Craigslist who had a bunch of cylinders listed for $5 each, so I just purchased the whole lot. The lady I bought them from was clearly not a collector herself, but I'd be interested to know who owned these cylinders originally, because the original owner did something very peculiar which annoyed me.

The original owner put a piece of tape on each box and then wrote out each title, and then removed all the lids for some reason. Very few of the cylinders in the lot have their original lids, and, oddly, most of the ones that do have lids have their lids have them on the bottom end of the boxes. The owner apparently removed the lids from the tops of the containers, then cut out the centre portions of the lids with just the titles showing, and then pasted them onto the bottom of their respective boxes, for some bizarre reason. My only guess as to why someone would do this is that he or she must have had some storage box that required the cylinders to be stored upside-down; but if anyone else can provide insight, I'd certainly be interested to hear it.

The original owner probably had a drawer with pegs and still wanted to keep the cylinders "protected" by the box. Personally, I just place the lid of the container over the top of the cylinder and peg--non-destructive, it fits, and the drawer itself protects the cylinder.

Fantastic find!!
Congratulations!
I often have dreams at night about such finds--but you were one of the first to actually live it!

Don't hold your breath for a reply. This person never responded to his Youtube comments nor did he reply to his post on the Edison board.

He's only got one comment on each of his two phono videos, and 4 comments on his home page. And he has responded to 1 of the 3 comments on his third video.
I rarely respond to youtube comments either, and if I do it's usually because I know the person or because they've been helpful in some way. Lifes too short & enjoyable to waste saying thank you to 10,000 people who say "nice video man" ;)
Others are just cranky & rude and not worth the effort.

Thank you for defending me. I don't know who Bill is, but I find his comments rather rude, and I don't know why he seems to take my lack of prompt responses so personally, but everything you just said is correct. I rarely ever check my few YouTube videos, and I don't bother to respond to comments unless I deem it necessary. I appreciate everyone's comments on YouTube and on these forums, of course, but I have many other things on my mind and other responsibilities which divert my attention. In fact, the reason I am responding now is because I haven't checked the boards since March. Had I seen the comments earlier, I would have replied earlier! Sorry if that offends anyone...I certainly didn't mean to. I'm just extremely slow in responding to things unless they are of immediate importance!

Again, thank you for all your comments about my wonderful Edison finds...if I have time this summer, I will try to take videos of some of them and put them on YouTube...but to avoid controversy, I'm not making any promises!
