Columbia Grafonola record cupboard?

Post by Steve »

I'm intrigued by this set of deep drawers (for records) in a cabinet sitting under a Columbia Grafonola Table model.

The two mesh together almost perfectly in terms of size, mahogany timber, age, wear and colour. Just up for auction together, I'm guessing the base has always been with the Columbia Table model. But is it a Columbia offered accessory or just a dealer supplied matching piece?

Steve, I doubt this is a Columbia product although it also caught my eye as a good fit for the Grafonola. It has an antique style and might also suit an older machine.

And what could be better than an item from the tv star PS!

I have several Columbia machine catalogues from 1913 to 1929, and none of them include a record cabinet.
I must agree that the cabinet pictured is a remarkably good match. I wonder whether it has a maker's label.

In my experience, PS seems to care very little about gramophones and consequently when they do infrequently pass through his saleroom, they rarely make anywhere close to their true value. Advertising the sale a day or two ahead is rarely sufficient for anything though in fairness. Being on TV is clearly far more important.

Sold for a hammer price of £35, very cheap. I hope Steve got it.

No, I didn't bid in the end. It was working and had its handle but although only ½ hour's drive from me, it is an utter PITA collecting anything for me as I am tied up in the week when they are open with zero flexibility re collection times. Also, I'm not sure I have enough interest in the machine whilst I would not have wanted to separate the cabinet from it. I asked about a maker's name but they neglected to reply to that part of my question. I believe it was just a very well made cabinet, purposefully manufactured to fit that Columbia, so possibly unique.

The total price is just shy of £50. Is that "very cheap" these days for a table grand? An arguably better HMV has been on Ebay for weeks at that price with little interest.
