Cylinder Cabinet Peg Numbers

Post by columbia1spring »

Members.
I finished installing new pegs in my cabinet. Looks real nice except I’m now missing the numbers on top of the pegs.
Any insight how to get them on there? Was it a rubber stamp? Anyone selling the stamps? Anyone have them and would like to lend them out? I’ll pay Time and Postage.
Thank You?
Paul G

Hey Paul,

A couple of thoughts. First, not all cabinet peg tops were numbered. From surviving examples, Herzog cabinets seemed to have been stamped with just the number. Several dealers, and probably cabinet makers, made circular paper labels with numbers on them that were glued to the peg top.

There are lots of variations out there from which to choose. With a little research, you could find the right stamp, or copy a label to punch out of paper, or just leave them blank.

I only had to replace the top drawer of 30 pegs. The rest of the cabinet pegs, 31-150 are intact and numbered on the top.

Also, many people cut out the slips which came with Edison and Columbia records and pasted them to the pegs. At some point Edison started putting the title/artist in a circle sized to be cut out for that purpose. Other tags were often handwritten.

This cabinet has the original owner's labels, with the correct matching cylinders for many of them. It represents many years of building a collection.

Here's a link to a forum topic a few years ago-- I showed pics of pegs and the stamp and give details about it's make and number. Hope this helps- Pics are long gone--but info is there. I'll attach a couple pics here. There are several companies that sell the Pullman stamps-- You can find one online.
Hope this helps.
