Is this a VV 8-12 ? What would be considered a fair price these days ?

yes, that looks like an 8-12 and if it's working and the condition in person is as good as it appears in the photos, then that seems like a decent price. if you decide to buy it and want to find the proper grill (and grill cloth) for it (for the front of the horn, where the seller has that cloth stretched over), I've got one from a parts machine I was going to list on ebay.

I actually thought that the price might be on the cheap side, even if it is not as desirable as the credenza. (the dog book lists $600 and up)
I am new to the hunt for an orthophonic, so I am still trying to figure out what the going price is. Thanks for the reply.

I paid $600 for mine in early 2009, the only drawbacks were the (typical) crumbling tonearm bracket and dullness of the finish. The reproducer was in great shape, and with the prices those go for alone, that can seriously add or detract from the price. While not a Credenza, it's not a Granada, either, and fits perfectly in my bedroom. The Credenza is in the dining room and the poor Granada is relegated to the basement. It's a nice Orthophonic machine.

All 8-12s came in walnut, so the finish should clean up nicely with a little TLC. I believe that there are replacement tone arm brackets available, too. No reason why this machine can't be enjoyed for what it is, providing the sound box is OK. Just my 2¢ worth.

I reluctantly sold my 8-12 a few years ago - - only because I didn't need two Orthophonics. I kept a good Credenza, but truthfully, I like the looks of the 8-12 better. The difference in sound was there, but negligible unless a side-by-side comparison was made. In the end, I decided I'd rather haul the 8-12!

Interesting, George. Our 8-12 stories are quite similar. I was very pleased with my 8-12, but once I acquired my 8-30 there was no question about which machine to keep. I too like the looks of the 8-12 better but the Credenza/8-30 is the ultimate Orthophonic and the icon of the era.

They are a very nice machine, I have one I restored last year and it's one of my nicest orthophonics in my collection, that's a very nice price for this one, but like the person said replace that ugly fabric they are using as grill cloth
