New addition: VV-XVIII
I bought this one at the Union show. Just delivered by Ron Haring, who lives in my area. These pics are the "before" pics, prior to cleaning with Gojo and wax/polish. The finish is finely alligatored, but overall in nice original shape.

Nice! Every time I see an XVIII - especially a nice one like yours - I regret selling mine. The mahogany looks brown - or is that just the camera? (The one I had was decidedly red mahogany.) I especially like the retailer's tag, and the low serial number. Congratulations!

Definitely a brown mahogany, George. Jasper's is red, for a comparison:

Yeah - that's the baby!
I'll bet his serial number isn't as low as yours...

I'll bet you were glad to be persuaded to get this! It's a beaut, and the "after" pics should be great! Congrats!

Looks fabulous
A friend of mine once said you will never regret the good things you buy, only the ones that got away. I still remember the XVIII at the Route 1 NJ flea market (circa 1979) that was just too big for our apartment, and too expensive for my grad asst. salary (I think it was $475). Also the chinese decorated Electrola at the flea market in Wachung NJ (also about 1980).....sigh

Lovely machine---congratulations! And a finished back, to boot. And a nice big horn. Wow! Good catch!

They are remarkable machines. It might be worth trying to run down someone who can do French polishing and have them give the cabinet a go. I realize that finding someone who really knows how to do it right is almost an impossible task. I know of nobody here in Toronto that really can do it correctly but someone must exist somewhere.

It looks great to me! IMO I'd leave well enough alone and focus on getting the best sound possible out of it.
