Another "hack job"

Post by Gleemanguy »

I was looking in CL and found what could have been a really nice "L-Door"

At least it wasn't a Pooley cabinet. I think the Pooley Victrolas are silly looking, but I know that they're valuable, and at least it wasn't one of the "L" doors with the decal reading "Victor Victrola". What happened here is sickening enough, but it could have been even worse.

Wonder if anyone will ever post photos of a similarly mutilated Vernis-Martin, or a VV XX?

I just read the CL description for the cabinet with the lighted top. I had to laugh when I read that the top gave it a "vintage look". Yeah, it looked way too up-to-date in its original condition. It was also funny to read that these cabinets sell for $400 "in their original condition", perhaps because they're worth something "in their original condition" and haven't been turned into some bizarre worthless piece of junk that only a decorator from HGTV could love.

Maybe there's some reason for it. Maybe it was gutted already? Maybe the internals were damaged by some long-forgotten "restorer"? I know that someone in my family has a nice upright Philco radio from the '30s that had a speaker taken out (the speaker's still around, fortunately 8-) ). Or some shortbus whose only friend is his vacuum cleaner thought that it would be the neatest thing ever to hack out the internals of a Victrola and replace it with stuff that would look and function better on a shelf

It does really make you want to weep. I was in an antique shop yesterday. There was what was once a lovely oak VV-XVI. Finish stripped, upper doors gone, and a large wooden internal horn from something else stuck in—apparently because it protruded far enough to hide where the hinges from the upper doors were attached to the frame. Not to mention other broken or missing parts.

I hope there is an extra warm circle in Hades for these people.
