Victrola Orthophonic Credenza Reproducer

Hi,
Is there a trick or technique to unscrew the back of the pot metal orthophonic reproducer, so you can change the diaphragm gaskets. I tried everything, but it does not bugde. I need some advise.

Unfortunately, even if the potmetal hasn't cracked and appears OK, it may have swelled. They can be very difficult to get apart. I will not offer any tricks lest they contribute to damaging the soundbox.

My only advise is to be careful.

the best advice, unless you're really eager to learn how to do this on your own (and especially if you're just looking to save some money), is to send it to one of the known restorers who are discussed often enough in the various threads on this board - walt sommers of gettysburg antique phonographs is one of them. it's not too costly and good results will be pretty well guaranteed. rebuilding the orthophonic reproducers, particularly the pot metal type, is time-consuming and can get complicated - there are several tiny ball bearings and other parts you've got to deal with beyond the mere diaphragm and gaskets. even getting these open without damaging them can be a challenge. if you decide to risk it on your own, then at least read up on it first. the eric reiss book is good, and this site and others also offer decent instructions.

Walt Sommers will do a fine job of fixing your reproducer if:

1: it is rebuildable
2: the diaphragm is usable.

He can sometimes be a little hard to get a hold of.

Walt does very fine work, but it may be better to phone (717-334-0862) than to rely on e-mail, which can sometimes be very slow. But have no hesitation about the quality of his service.
