Where are you located, Scram? If it's near me I would be happy to check out the mechanicals on your XVII. Reply here or send me a PM. I've no experience with VE electricals, but as others have commented, it looks like a straightforward hookup. You might have a problem with continuity in the old wiring, and/or the resistor bank may be on the blink. I'm fairly sure that there's a way to make this baby run, even if you have to substitute some parts with modern replacements. Alternatively, you can inquire about original replacements from a source like George Vollema.

Hi Scram. I have a VE-XVI and I'm curious how your machine turned out? Were you able to get her up and running? The resistor on mine looks like each coil was encased in asbestos or some sort of white casing. Much of that casing has chipped away making it a concern for me? Does your resistor look similar and if so, did it cause any problems when you powered her up.
