This auction should be fun to watch! (I certainly can't afford to bid!)

Re: 5" Berliner record on ebay
Interestingly the high bidder pulled his bid today, dropping the bid down by $1000. The reason says "entered wrong bid amount", but who knows, at $2900 the reserve was still not met.

5" Berliners are the earliest flat disc records, made for the early toy gramophones from 1889.USlakeside wrote:Is this a common price? Why is it special? Just curious, Ive never tried to buy one.

Re: 5" Berliner record on ebay
I have written a series of illustrated articles, some in co-authorship with Patrick Feaster, about the development of Emile Berliner's gramophone in Germany from September 1889. They are printed in The Sound Box, the publication of the California Antique Phonograph Society, published quarterly. Part 4 of the series, picturing the first commercially sold gramophone model of August/September 1890, is ready and will be published in the September issue. http://www.antiquephono.org/SoundBox.htmlBlimpy wrote: 5" Berliners are the earliest flat disc records, made for the early toy gramophones from 1889.
I do not wish to anticipate my future articles, but the above is a later model, and the 5" disc in question is a 2nd pressing (still of the early 1890s) ...

Although the reserve was not met at $2900, the same "high bidder" now placed a bid of $2001,99. There is something shady in this auction. In my opinion this is only forcing up of prices.penman wrote:Interestingly the high bidder pulled his bid today, dropping the bid down by $1000. I think you're right as it first was offered at eBAY Germany (with only (bad) information in German just as he don't know what he's selling !)There is something shady in this auction. In my opinion this is only forcing up of prices.
As I remember the highest bid was about 640 Euros when he ended the auction after 7 or 8 days...
Probably some collectors send me a PM and he waked up...
