Victrola #4002, "AULD SCOTCH SANGS," and "MARY OF ARGYLE."
Just played this Orthophonic disc on my 8-35, and I've just experienced some sort of longing for the Scottish isles.....and I'm not even Scottish!
Harry's voice, for once, is actually very beautiful, and both sides of this record are quite moving. Excellently recorded, and just lovely.
For the dozens of Lauder discs I have excommunicated to the back of the closet with my scratchy Columbia acoustic discs, this one is the ONLY ONE I keep in my "play often" box.
I hope you can find yourself a copy and appreciate it as well.

I'm not familiar with that one, but love his "Loch Lomond" on 12" Orthophonic disc 9295.

Harry Lauder was phenomenally popular. I think he still holds the record as the highest paid entertainer (allowing for inflation). PBS had a special on him called "Something about Harry", and Scotland has a motorway named after him.
For some reason I have a weakness for things scottish. I love Harry Lauder's recordings. I've read virtually everything that Sir Walter Scott wrote, and one of my goals is to visit Scotland someday. My heritage is 100% German, so go figure.

I have a weakness for things Harry Lauder! In a down mood? All I need to do is toss on a Lauder or two - that laugh!
I read his book, A Minstrel in France, about his trip to sing for the troops after his son died in action. Well worth reading.

I too have a fondness for Harry's music. My heritage is Scottish, my Grandmother was from Glasgow. She loved Harry and used to play his records at family get togethers when I was a kid. The whole family would sing along and it was lot's of fun. I particularly like A Wee Deoch An' Doris.

This is a video of the non-US issue HL cylinder I was asking about in a previous thread.

Also, an interesting video of HL on vacation in California.

Piqued my interest. I too, had relegated Harry Lauder to the ranks of artists that I would pass over,
and I like Scottish songs. Just not the way I've heard him do them, via those hoary sounding purple label acoustic Victors.

Re: my favourite Harry Lauder 78, and I'm not even from Scotland
He's a favourite of mine and he was unbelievably popular in Canada. I really like his electrical recordings which seem in general to have the most charm. He grasped the subtleties of microphone technique technique and used it well.Speaking of electricals the Canadian Victor 29000 Red Seal series had several records of his that weren't issued in the States.
I first grasped how extraodinarily popular he was in Canada when as a kid I did a presentation of phonographs and such at a local historical celebration. I thought those old dears...with tears in their eyes in some cases.... were going to crawl down the horn of the Edison every time I played a Lauder cylinder. We're talking rural Ontario folks who were born in the 1880's and 90's many of whom had seen Lauder in person. I only had two cylinders of Lauder in those days and I wasn't going to take either to play until my grandmother suggested it. Granny was right.

How funny: Here you are talking about Lauder, and Greer Garson is on TCM, doing a Lauder routine.

I started collecting records 40 years ago at age 15. I was introduced early on to SHL and loved his records, although I couldn't believe that they would let someone make records when they were sick or drunk. Stupid me!
Does anyone remember Edie Dippel's sirharrylauder.com site? It was a wonderful testament to Sir Harry. Unfortunately, she died several years ago and no one maintained her website, as far as I can determine.
Go to the Internet Archive and search for "harry lauder love makes world merry go round". I think you will be pleased with this recording!
