O/T - No more grille cloth

Post by gramophoneshane »

I just read this on the Antique Radio Forum so I thought I'd pass it on as I know there's a few of us here who also collect early radios & electric phonographs.
I seems the manufacturer who supplies reproduction grille cloths to grillecloth.com & Radiodaze is going out of business, and once current stocks are gone, they are gone for good.

I think it's a great shame this has happened, & I'm actually a little surprized because antique radio seems to have a much bigger following than talking machines, and I would have thought there was enough demand for many of the more common styles to make continued manufacturing worthwhile.
Whether some other U.S. company will start reproducing any in the future is anyones guess, and if it starts to be made in countries like China & India, quality & accuracy may suffer too.
My advise- if you need anything they offer, grab it NOW before it's too late. Apparently some stocks are already exhausted.

Sad news. I hope someone will pick up the slack.

That is indeed sad. I purchased a great piece of fabric from the Grillcloth site last year and its very high quality and just perfect for my old radio cabinet I was working on. As mentioned it would be great if someone could pick it up, but its such a limited demand product and probably rather pricy to produce that I can see how it might have failed eventually. I never really thought though that they had much if anything that worked well in a victrola? Would be nice if one or two designs could be produced for all the phonograph collectors out there to at least have something authentic looking to use, even if it wasn't the exact design of the originals.

Grillecloth.com has an exact duplicate of the grill cloth for my VV 9-15. But perhaps that is now, or soon will be, a thing of the past. I am just happy that I bought it when I did.

I have used grill cloth.com in the past and that really is a great shame as what they offered was affordable and excellent authentic reproductions. I bought a good quantity of thier rca diamond pattern material to put away for when I needed it for a project. I am so glad I did.

But it is a shame as what will people do on restorations...I dont know of other sites that dont rely on the same source of cloth.
