You've got the right clip, and the hole is for the crank, but you have to feed the crank into the hole so it runs along the front under the motor board. It's a bit of a pain, but once you get used to putting it in that way, it's held firmly so it doesn't move and rattle around while carrying it.
Interesting rhat the soundbox isn't Thorens, but I guess by this stage they may have bought soundboxes from other manufacturers. I've never heard of Upco before, but that's not surprising I guess.
If you ever get the chance, I wouldn't mind seeing a close-up picture of the front & back of the soundbox.

So would Ilarryh wrote: I would love to still find an original ad or shot of this machine.

The only ad I could find was for a Deluxe from 1926, but perhaps yours originally had the same tonearm as shown?
My Pals have the same design pressed into lid as shown in the ad, and are the same basic layout as the deluxe, so I'd say mine machines date from around 1926 & probably had the same mask on my soundbox.

Shane,
Yes with your instructions the crank did finally fit into that holder. Would have never guessed that one! I don't think this reproducer came with the machine still. Its not that unusual around here to find machines where for what ever reason the reproducers have been switched out for a replacement over the years. In fact I think the Sears Catalogs sell an upgrade or replacement to use on your phonograph. The design of this and the size just don't fit the look of the machine to me. But who knows? The arm as I you said may also be wrong. But that isn't as clear. It seemed to me to be a bit different in color than the rest of the gold things on the machine. This reproducer was a mess and I put some gold gilt on it which didn't do much for an already ugly design. The part I fixed on the rear where the screw goes didn't hold again when I tried to remove it so I think its a loss, which is pretty much mute since it sounds tinny at best.
thanks for the ad you do have, at least its a clue. Some machines of the later types have the arms like it has, it could be they used it on this machine or it could be its something someone for some reason added to it. You could tell someone had been tinkering with it previous to me finding it.

Re: Pal Supreme Portable
Just found this ad posted on eBay, which includes your Pal Supreme I think. It's quite expensive with $12.99 plus shipping, but maybe the picture by itself helps...?

Re: Pal Supreme Portable
Thanks! That is the first half way decent view of it I have seen. It does show a reproducer similar to shanes so now I have a fair idea what it looked like. Mine has these crazy solid lid supports which may have served a purpose but I personally don't care for them. I do think it might have some chance at a decent tone if the reproducer was good as my test showed. Now how to find one?

Re: Pal Supreme Portable
Good Idea, I copied it out for my self yesterday.. I was wondering what the advantage of having the arm pivot from the front instead of the more standard rear space might be? The horn does open widely across the rear and that is about the only thing I can see as the reason. For my own taste I am not fond of the arm operating what seems backwards to me.

although it's been 2 years since these messages, I have one just like it and is in perfect working condition. everything is there and solid. mine is an all wood fabrication has a fairly good condition plywood varnished box. only the leather handle is broken.
I also have 10 or twelve vintage 78 records (all classical and are in great condition.
