Re: Sherwin-Williams Paints & Varnishes
I recently acquired a copy of this record while junking north of London, Ontario. I was surprised to find the matrix number 31030 take 2 was on it, which blew my mind considering this matrix series was also used on Compo's Ajax label in 1924. I believe it may also have been used for their Paling's label exported to Australia, also. I have tried to contact Sherwin Williams Centre of Excellence for more information about this record, and am still waiting for a response. I also saw that someone tried to sell it on E Bay and was asking $375.00 for it at one point.

Yes, they are still very much in business! There is a S-W store less than a mile from my house. I've used their products for years.

The discussion is about the advertising records manufactured on their behalf by the Compo Company of Lachine Quebec during the 1920's, for which no information appears in the discographies, unless Rust has made reference to them, for which I am unaware of, as I do not have copies of his books.

Interesting info, guys. If anyone is curious, here's a link to the audio from this record that you can listen to:
http://www.archive.org/details/Sherman- ... eAgain1924
I believe the "Sherwin-Williams Dance Orchestra" is composed of Sherwin-Williams employees. Sherwin-Williams started in 1866 in Cleveland, OH, and still exists today (as a Fortune 500 company and the largest paint company in the US).
If anyone is interested, there is someone selling a copy of this record on eBay for $175.

Also, this may be a long shot, but if anyone has access to Record Research Magazine from the early 1960s, there appears to be a section about TWO Compo promotional records for Compo. Read the snippet here:
http://books.google.com/books?id=VC7aAA ... rch_anchor
This is from "page 81" of "Issues 48-56"
"In last issue we mentioned data on two Compo promotional records for Sherwin-Williams Paint Company. This data was furnished by Alex Robertson, of Montreal, from the discs in his collection. We had thought that last time was the wrap-up for now on the Ajax data. But we still have a few more new facts to list to make the Catalog as up to the minute as possible.
"Here are the additions to add to our Ajax listing: Aj 17027 has been acquired by Walt Allen; here is the data - A. Don't Know and Don't Care...." (the rest is unreadable)
I'm really curious to see what was said in the "last issue" of this magazine. I found Record Research Magazine issues at several libraries (see http://www.worldcat.org/title/record-re ... lc/4554179), though none are near me. Also, is anyone aware of a SECOND Sherwin-Williams Compo record? And is the "Sherwin-Williams Dance Orchestra" on one side of the record made up of S-W employees, or was this a professional orchestra?

Re: Sherwin-Williams Paints & Varnishes
I bought a copy of one of these records recently online for a very low price. Unfortunately, it broke in half during shipping, which is a huge disappointment. Is there any hope or point in having the record repaired, or am I better off leaving it alone (for collectible/value purposes)?

A fellow collector, and an expert in Compo pressings, has confirmed that this record was recorded by Sam Lanin and his Orchestra on the A side.
