How often to oil your Victorla?

Post by Edisonfan »

Hey everyone,

I need to know, how often to oil and grease a Victrola, and how do I get inside my VV-X? In order to oil the machine?

Oiling frequency all depends on how often you play your machine. Heres my rough lubrication schedule that use:

Playing 3-5 sides per week
Oil gears every 3-6 months.
Lubrication (grease) 6-12 months.
Mainsprings should be serviced for lubrication every 18-24 months.

You can increase or decrease these variables according to how often you play your machine.

You can access your motor by unscrewing the outer motor board bolts, some lids have outside screws lift up on the motorboard or lid and lubricate as necessary. Leave all mainspring work to a professional these are dangerous to work on.

Regreasing the springs is a job you only have to do once every 20 years, or thereabouts. As for lubricating the other parts (governor, crank shaft, etc) I only do that if they start squeaking, maybe once a year.

If your VV X is like mine you get to the motor like this: turn the crank backward to unscrew and remove it, lift off the turntable (being careful to swing the tone arm out of the way) then take out the two screws in the front of the motor board. There should be a knob to swing the board and the motor up, and once you do that there should be a diagram inside showing where to apply a little grease and a few drops of oil.

It is best to let the spring run down before you do this.
