Since you quoted me too, let me clarify that I like her records, many of them. And yes with Goodman especially, in the 78 era. She did some fine long playing records for Capitol as well.



Another one for the thread topic for me would be the Andrews Sisters, me no likey. Boswells yes, Andrews nada.

As far as "SisterActs" go, I cannot abide the Duncan Sisters. On the other hand the Brox sisters did some nice stuff, and I can think of kind words even for the Keller Sisters (and Lynch), but none can hold a candle to the great Boswells.

I must confess I didn't know what a 'coon song' was until about 10 minutes ago. Collecting material largely from the 20s and early 30s I never see them. Wikipedia seems to think they were popular here in the UK for a brief period at the turn of the century but then no more. I think I'd refer back to the very first sentence of this post though. Some things just don't compute anymore. I'm happy to just leave those to history

Have you no discs by G. H. Elliot, the "Chocolate Colored Coon"? His act was popular up through the War on your Isles. Then there was the sublime Eugene Stratton, who made famous "Lily of Laguna", a coon song if ever such there was. Of course your British songs in this vein tended to be more affectionate and adult in tone than some American numbers.

I must admit I have never heard either of them. I am relatively new to all of this however. I shall be on the lookout for those two for a bit of interest. Recommendations always welcome! Thank you.

Don't forget "I'll Take You Home Again, Kathleen", apparently one of TAE's favorite songs. It shows up everywhere. I personally can't stand it!

Yes, The Rosary, A Perfect Day, Among My Souvenirs, The Lost Chord, and lots of others in that vain. Break out the Jesse Crawford records or even the Hawaiian stuff, but just those leave those extra dull parlor songs on the shelf.

One of the most annoying records is Horses. I can't stand listening to the vocalist singing "horses, horses, horses." The repetition can drive a person nuts!

The "We'll do our duty-ooty and send the Kaiser packing-acking" kind of stuff.

I collect records of WWI songs, so, not against the 'genre' entirely, just the quality of some.

I know it's a bit past the group's usual interest, but Bill Haley's early records include something called "Straight Jacket" (sic), which consists of Haley and another vocalist singing the words "straaaaaaight jacket!" enthusiastically over and over for 2 and a half minutes. One of the worst records ever made.
