It's about time. For now, North Korea looks like it will be free-er sometime in the future. According to the article, he died of a heart attack on a train while visiting one of the armies. Kim Jong un is likely going to take over, but there's always hope that the country will change it's system of government. North Koreans are in a state of mourning over their lost leader, and details are still sketchy owing to North Korea's reclusive nature. Time will tell whether the state will become more neutral, or release their foreign prisoners, or take their nuclear program down a few notches, but there is hope. As for right now, it is the end of an era for the harsh oppression that was Kim Jong Il's reign.

I do not wish to create a confrontational atmosphere, and I fully realize that this news headline and the following story is of international importance, especially to those with strong ties to, and in, the Asian community, but I must ask .....does it belong HERE in a forum devoted to antique phonographs? Does it not belong in a forum such as MSNBC, or any other news chat/opinion site? Just asking.

We've had several off topic posts on this forum, over the years. I recently made one which included a video showing images from inside the USS Arizona wreck--including a pair of pants still hanging in a closet--which I posted on the 70th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor.

Interestingly, there is a bridge that connects Kim Jong Il with our hobby--though admittedly, it's a rather shaky one. As noted on several sites, including -- http://www.gluckman.com/NKGift.html -- among the "90,000 tokens of esteem" at Kim Il's International Friendship Exhibition Hall, which is located at Myohyang-san mountain, North Pyongan province in North Korea, is an antique gramophone that was donated by Zhou Enlai.

I read about this several years ago, and wondered exactly what it was. The first image that came to mind was something with an ornate stamped brass colored horn; a sound box equipped with a bashed-in aluminum diaphragm (marked "HMV"); a crank coming from beneath the turntable at a slight angle; and an overly lacquered cabinet labeled with a slightly off-center "His Master's Voice" logo applique.

Now that the "dear leader" is immortal, I'm wondering if the gramophone will make its way to eBay, along with the museum's other 89,999 treasures.

For me, the really interesting thing was watching the news last night. After announcing that Kim was dead, the local (Boston) news stations all went into 15 minutes of coverage of the Patriots football team's win, then 30 more seconds about Kim. Just fascinating to me that a football game gets literally 15 times more coverage.

Hello,52089-----I hail from Boston also and your point is valid.Although Boston is home to some of the best colleges and universities this great country has to offer, it is also the most fanatical sports city ----second to none.Plus you must remember that Kim is dead and by most will not be missed,but the Patriots will be rolling right through the play-offs on their way to another Superbowl!!!!! They have more trophys than I have phonographs. Happy collecting 52089.

Kim Jong was obviously more Il than we thought, but thankfully he is long Jong now. His son might need a new Korea though if he can't get on with the military.
