Holy Insane Victor Motor Price!!!

Ok...I get that this is the three spring version that fits the VTLA and Vic 5 and 6. I also get that it comes with the turn table...but seriously, $1,054.00!!!!!! And the motor isn't even cleaned and serviced!!!

I recall some time ago, a seller was trying to sell one for just under $500, and it was completely cleaned and serviced, and I thought that was a bit steep at the time. I've purchased 2 of these in the past, one at a steal ($50, and it came with a tone arm and reproducer that I sold for more than that), the other I paid $200 for (and spent a bit more than that to have it completely cleaned...it was a mess), but even that one came with the turn table, screw that holds the turntable down, motorboard, crank, and they even threw in the horn from the VTLA.

I suppose when you just really NEED to have the part, you just have to hope no one else does as well.

Let me preface this by saying that anything is ultimately worth whatever someone is willing to pay for it. The price of this motor and the attendant fall-out reminds me of what happened to Gustav Stickley sideboards in 1988, when bad things happened because of a market abberation. One of the prominent New York auction houses held an auction featuring a number of pieces of Gustav Stickley furniture that had been Gustav Stickley's personal furniture. Enter Barbara Streisand, who has more money than god, and whose hobby is decorating several period homes that she owns. Babs pays $363000 for Gus's personal sideboard, the exact type that was routinely bringing $2500 before. After the auction, the price of all Gus sideboards went through the roof, taking the price of ALL Gus furniture up with them, and even taking the price of ALL Arts & Crafts furniture up regardless of maker. For a good year, the Arts & Crafts furniture market -- especially Gus furniture and particularly Gus sideboards -- was in a state of near paralysis because overnight, no one could afford the stuff anymore and everyone was leery of paying jacked-up prices because no one was sure if prices were going to rise or fall. It took over a year for prices to drop and begin to stabilize again, but still at about twice what they had been before and Gus stuff stayed way up -- all because of one single aberration of the market caused by one buyer. However, to this day no one has paid even remotely close to that for a Gus sideboard, and likely no one ever will.
As someone who will be in the hobby for 45 years in 2012, I miss the days when people collected these things when they were practically worthless and it wasn't so much about the money.
