Question on my Edison Gem

Post by JB Brown »

I have a Gem that gets about 1:20 seconds into a record and it skips and plays the same part over and over. If I gently push the carriage, I can get it to play thru the rest of the record. I have tried numerous records and it does the same thing on each one. I see no visible problems on my feed screw or the half nut? Any Ideas?

Thanks.

Sounds like your half nut is worn & needs replacing.

Since it always stops at about the same place I would suggest the problem is with the feedscrew when the half nut passes over the problems threads. Check them out carefully, it doesn't take much in the way of a problem thread to throw the half nut off, especially if there's any friction. Good luck.

Both Penman and Shane have given you great advice and the place to investgate and resolve your problem. As a collector in my mid 60's,I have to constantly adjust my full nuts,so I do not crush the damn things everytime I sit down.

You should also check the carriage rod. There might be damage or corrosion that restricts the carriage from progressing causing the half nut to skip.
