Just got the governor fixed on my parisian portable. it is still a little noisy when running with no needle on the record, not sure what the deal is with that. The cone I made from a piece of heavy paper and a paper clip, thanks to the diagram posted by Andreas Lang in a previous post I made about this machine. it is not full sized, and maybe not the best paper, but it is surprisingly loud. I am thinking paper with properties like a manilla file folder would be ideal, or maybe some kind of thin plastic sheeting.
This is a crappy youtube video I made of it running with my iPhone. still working on my videography skills, but you get the picture.

I am trying to decide now whether I should build a nice wooden case for it, or return it to it's original metal case. I also need to flatten the platter a bit. when I took it off, I had to use a hydraulic press it was on the spindle so tight, made the middle indent ever so slightly. shouldn't be a big deal to fix, and doesn't seem to be hurting anything at the moment.
Thanks to all for the help so far, especially Andreas. looking forward to playing with more of these machines. would love to get a victor portable at some point, but have to wait until the price is right and the right machine comes along.

Do you have any idea how to stop the rumbling that goes on before the needle is on the record? It seems related to slack in the gear train, but I am not sure. The governor is able to slide back and forth along its axis in its bearings. I might be able to stop the governor moving along its axis, but I don't know if it is supposed to be able to.
