Book Idea.

Post by edisonphonoworks »

I know many of you dismiss me. However at least I was considered for a position at the Library of Congress and made it to the interview stage, which I think is quiet an honor. Because my verbal and writing skills suffer from limitations from ADHD, AS, and Dyslexia I have never been taken seriously by this community, who see me as Addle and "misguided" . I still have things I would like to accomplish. Below is small proof that I might know a thing or two about recording, and making phonograph blanks. I would like help putting together a comprehensive study of the history of cylinder record manufacture, not only historical documents, but also having a competent photographer, preserve a study on the re-creation of historical recording media and techniques. I also want to include photographs and explanations of all extant historical equipment used by as many cylinder companies as possible, recording machines, heads, molds, notes . Full color photos of the extant equipment, molds, recorders, and changes in form, spiral core, brown wax, Columbia Wax, Edison wax, Pathé', ect. Anyone willing to help me tackle this?? There has been some attempts at this but not anything as comprehensive as what is in my mind. I think all would benefit from such a compilation. I though need editors, and interests to have this idea come to fruition, I can steer this project, and have the vision.

Sincerely

Shawn Borri "that misguided hobbyist"

Shawn,

I would get in touch with Allan Sutton at the Mainspring Press: www.mainspringpress.com and pitch your idea to him. I know they're always looking for new books related to anything like that!

Shawn,
I don't believe that many in here dismiss you and I don't believe this community sees you as Addle and Misguided! I had to look the word up first! I think most of us if not all find it admirable that someone with your stated disabilities has been able to focus yourself into a unique hobby / business which benefits all of us! The blanks which I purchased from you last week are going to be used to record grade-school classes while I give demonstrations of the phonograph and early sound.

I am looking forward to receiving the blanks and thank you for the recording tips!

as a cylinder artist for "Vulcan" I'd love to be involved with photography, etc, but I live in Australia and I'm a bit too far away, unfortunately.

Great idea, Shawn.

I too think a complete early cylinder book is a great idea. I like the idea of including the processes, design differences and details of development. May be a big undertaking but sounds like you have the drive to accomplish something like this.

Yea I would guess anyone not into the hobby who stumbles across this forum would probably consider that all of us are misguided, addled and then some!
