Brazen YouTube Ripper musichistory111

Post by WDC »

I usually don't make a dispute public, but since this going on for more than week now and no signs of improvement in sight, I'd like to point out the YouTube user musichistory111.

While doing some search analysis of my own videos, I found two titles, this person had ripped from my brown wax broadcast at WFMU.

So, I left a comment on one of these rips of an 1892 North American cylinder, which I had transferred, carefully filtered and presented on WFMU in 2010. I kindly wrote, that I would not mind him putting these up, but it certainly had not hurt, if he gave the proper credits for the transfer and filtering.

Instead of an addition to his description or a reply, explaining his intentions, he deleted my comment and blocked me leaving any further comments.

So, I left another comment under a different account, that he just deleted and blocked again within the last 24 hours.

I could identify most of his posts to be ripped from the Antique Phonograph Music Program and Thomas Edison's Attic.

So, if anyone would like to leave comments and click a the dislike buttons, I'd appreciate it very much. Comments and feedback from more different names won't be likely so easy to cope with that just me re-appearing. These are the two rips from my broadcast:

I don't think it's too much to ask for being properly mentioned. Thanks in advance for any help.

It is cheeky to say the least, the least this person could do would be to put an attribute as to where the transfers have come from. All it would take is just a few lines.

I would sincerely hope its no one here.

I also left a message on the comments page of his channel for him to see.

Video & channel comment left :)
A lot of this goes on, on youtube unfortunately. Even some of my lame poor quality videos or the soundtracks have been reproduced occasionally by other users, so I know how annoying it can be (and the only work I do is push the button on the camera and the upload button on youtube).
I always feel honored when I get a message from a youtube user ASKING if I mind them using my video/s soundtrack for their video or on radio broadcasts etc, and I would never ever say no (with or without credit) because 1/ It's not my music, 2/ I haven't spent more than a couple minutes effort to get that music from my machine & cheap camera to youtube, & 3/ They've had the common decency to ask if I'd mind first.
Even if I had the skills & equiptment, and has spent the time to make a transfer, I would never refuse anyone who was courteous enough to contact me and get my permission first.
If I was like you, and had invested my money in expensive equiptment to make recordings, and then spent what I assume could easily sometimes be hours of my time playing, filtering & tweeking that recording to obtain the best possible sound quality from that recording, and then some user posted it on youtube under his name, with no mention of where he obtained the recording and who REALLY did all the hard yakka so a rare early recording could be enjoyed by others, I would go from being a little annoyed to very angry.

Honestly, I dont understand people like this musichistory111 fellow who post other peoples work & let viewers assume that they have a fine collection of antique music and expertise & skill to make great digital audio transfers.
I can only assume they are on some sort of ego trip, and taking credit for someone elses work makes them feel good? Personally, I'd feel guilty as hell & cringe everytime I got a comment telling me what a great collection I had, and how good I was at making transfers. I just could not do it or get any pleasure from that at all.
I was blocked a couple years ago by some guy called tweedleboy or something like that. He had lots of videos of digital transfers, and lots of subscribers, and most of his videos had comment after comment telling him how fantastic his transfers are, and thanking him for all the wonderful music he had taken the time to upload & share. When I commented on a couple of his cylinder recording, stating that they were very obviously & completely unchanged UofC Cylinder Preservation & Digitalization Project transfers with pictures added (also obtained online), I received a PM calling me names & telling me to mind my own business, and was blocked from leaving future comments or replying to his message
Like I said, I dont understand these people or what they gain from such deception

I have flagged these as dislikes; Norman, you should report these as inappropriate because they violate your copyright. By US law you have automatic copyright protection even without filing a form with the LOC. The fact that these were aired on radio is proof of priority. The original songs are public domain, your filtering is copyrighted. Youtube should take these down as violations of Terms of Service. The poster isn't listening so complain to Youtube. They do pull videos all the time for copyright violation.

I think so too.
I've never reported anyone who's used my audio in their video, but on the couple occasions someone has copied both the audio & video & uploaded to their channel, I've reported them & had it remove.
This guy hasn't even bothered putting pictures on the screen, so his video is made up entirely of YOUR work.

Friends, Thank you for all your support. This it was makes our community so special.

Yes, probably it's an appropriate way to report these to YouTube. However, I really would prefer this person to learn from this and take proper action.

From the first time I was sure, that it was no one I knew, otherwise I had been contacted at least afterwards. Over the years I also had several requests to use some of my material and never refused any of them.
Except for customer transfer, I usually don't pursue any payments, it's more a kind of a 'scientific appreciation'. I usually just draw my line when something like this is happening or someone is wants to make money himself. Here in Germany we had even ministers resigning after discovery of academic plagiarism in their doctoral theses.

After reading all the posts here and on YouTube, I do feel much better now. And yes, I went pretty well through the transition from being somewhat annoyed to angry. I had some others where I did the same thing and they corrected it, end of the story. I still like the principle of sharing.

Although it's unlikely to change the behavior by now, I'll wait some days and give him yet another chance to make it right. If he does not I will report it. But all your moral is very helpful to me.

THANK YOU! :-)
