Repairing a broken winding hole escutcheon "DIY"

I bought a VV 90 that had a crank hole escutcheon barrel that had come dislodged from its plate with the screw holes in it. Luckily the escutcheon barrel was still on the handle.

Since escutcheons are around 13 to 15 $$$ at some online sources I opt for DIY.

When trying to fit it back together I noticed that the metal on the escutcheon plate did not allow the escutcheon barrel to sit fully back down into the grooves on the barrel. THIS IS A GOOD THING!!

To fix this kind of problem what you need is:

9/16" socket from a socket wrench kit
a medium size hammer
1 toothpick
1 Q-tip
JB Weld (24 hour drying kind, not quick dry)


Process:
(Clean out groove in escutcheon barrel where the escutcheon plate fits around it.)

1. Put a line of JB weld into the groove with the toothpick

2. place the barrel on a hard, flat surface (groove end closest to the flat surface)

3. place the escutcheon plate (face side toward the groove end of barrel)

4. Place the 9/16" socket over the escutcheon barrel and plate and give a wrap with hammer

5. Use Q-tip to clean away any JB weld from front of escutcheon (leave it on the back side)

6. Let JB weld harden for 24 hours

You're welcome. Hope it works for you. I tried this yesterday morning and put the escutcheon back on thismorning and it is holding up fine so I thought I'd give something back to this forum since the people on it has helped me in my first purchase of a victrola and its restoration.

Note that if the hole in the Escutcheon plate with the screw holes in it is badly deteriorated it may not seat back into the grooves on the escutcheon barrel, it could punch all the way past them when giving it the tap from the hammer. I would start with at least one gentle wrap before hitting it hard.
