Edison Painted Horns

Post by USlakeside »

Did Edison issue their own versions of Painted flower horns with flowers inside? I always see aftermarket ones, but wondered if Edison, or Victor or Columbia for the matter, issued their factory own? Thanks

As far as I'm aware, Edison (Victor, Columbia, etc) only produced the plain horns.

Edison Standard Model-E had a blue painted flowered Standard horn. Many of the Columbia phonographs sold as client brands through mail order also had painted flowered horns.

Edison supplied grained oak finish metal cygnet horns and with the Standard Model E, a 10 panel strait blue horn with chrysanthemum decorations inside and a Standard decal on the outside. These are somewhat common but are not usually found in very good condition. See pics attached.

Edison also supplied metal cygnet horns with a mahogany grained finish, but I've never seen one.

It should be pointed out that neither Edison nor American Graphophone (Columbia was the sales agent) manufactured horns for cylinder talking machines until the Amberolas appeared. Edison and Columbia bought their horns from Hawthorne & Sheble, the Tea Tray Company, and the Standard Metal Manufacturing Company.

I'm also quite sure that the blue flowered Standard size horn was offered with the Fireside although that's a lot of horn for a little Fireside. Jerry Blais

yes, the Fireside model B also came with the blue with flowers if you paid an upgrade when you bought it.

In Australia, all horns were available in a variety of colours, without decoration but with the appropriate horn decals, from about 1909/10 onward. The only exception was the 10 panel cygnet which were never sold here. Instead, the 11 panel cygnet was used on all models, from the Fireside to Triumph.
Unlike Victor, HMV also used undecorated single coloured morning glory horns at least by 1905, but were probably available upon their introduction in late 1904.
